centres and self-help materials, Western can help you
with career, personal, learning and social concerns in
your first year and beyond.
Information Technology Services (ITS)

Information Technology Services (ITS) at Western
makes using computers both on and off campus
easy, and can help fix problems you may have.
Services include a free personal computer account
for all Western students, the availability of dial-up or
high-speed remote access, and seven central campus
general-purpose computer labs for your use. Keeping
up with friends from home through email is easy.
Visit the ITS Support Centre on the second floor of
the Natural Sciences Centre.

The Western Libraries web site provides access
to millions of items in print, electronic, and other
formats supporting the subject interests of all
Western Faculties. Use the Library Catalogue and
other web services to explore your field of study.
Helpful staff are available to provide assistance at
service desks in seven different locations: Archives
and Research Collections Centre; Business Library;
Education Library; John and Dotsa Bitove Family
Law Library; Music Library; Allyn and Betty Taylor
Library (Engineering, Health Sciences, Medicine and
Dentistry, Science); and The D.B. Weldon Library (Arts
and Humanities, Information and Media Studies,
Social Science).

The Book Store at Western offers the largest selection
of new and used textbooks for all university courses.
Owned by the University, The Book Store is Western’s
official campus bookstore and supports student
programs. The Campus Computer Store offers
educational rates for students on brand-name desktop
computer systems, laptops, software, accessories
and more.

Register for our Summer Academic Writing Clinic to ease
your transition to university. The Writing Centre also
offers free one-on-one tutoring sessions, on line support,
writing seminars and our Weldon drop-in service.
Learning Skills Services

Come by the Student Development Service’s Learning
Help Centre to learn how to better prepare for
multiple-choice and essay tests, to assess your skills
with the Learning and Study Strategies Inventory, to
develop science/math problem solving skills, or to
discover how you can be a better student. Attend a
presentation or schedule a one-on-one appointment
with a learning skills counsellor to discuss strategies
to excel in courses. Check out the Resource
Library and sign up for bi-weekly emails. Learning
Skills Services is located in Room 210, University
Community Centre.
Indigenous Services

SDS’s Indigenous Services is pleased to offer a
variety of services and programs designed to assist
Indigenous students to succeed at Western. Services
are housed in the Learning Resource Centre which
offers an up-to-date computer lab exclusively for indigenous students, a job board,
a quiet study area, and a collection of more than 1,200 books (available at Weldon Library) as well as a variety of other academic,
research, and informational needs resources.
Services include a Visiting Elder Program, a Cultural/
Personal Counsellor, and administrative support to
serve as liaison between students, the University and
Indigenous communities. Outreach and Recruitment
Services provides presentations to high schools and
community agencies/groups. Also, youth are offered
three different summer camps, as well as ongoing
sport and academic activities in partnership with
the faculties. The new Indigenous Services-Health
Sciences and Sciences Access/Transition Program
offers students intensive, academic, and personal
supports centred on a general first–and second–year academic programs. Indigenous Services is located oon the second floor of the Western Student Services Building, Room 2100.
Services For Students
With Disabilities
Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) assists
students who have ongoing conditions or challenges
that may include: chronic illnesses, chronic pain,
attention deficit disorders, learning disabilities,
psychiatric disorders, and vision, hearing or mobility
impairments. Students with disabilities can find help
accessing locations, services, technology and information
at the University. Academic accommodation can also
be arranged. SSD offers the Adaptive Computing
Technology Centre located on the fourth floor of the Western Student Services Building and the Access Lab and Learning Opportunities Lab located in the Weldon
Library. Set up a meeting with a counsellor to discuss
possible arrangements the University can make in
order to accommodate your needs.
LEAP 2011
August 17 to September 2
Moving to a new country is a time of great transition, and you will likely experience many changes and new expectations. LEAP is a program that will help you in your transition to Canada and to the new academic environment at Western. Created especially for international students like you, LEAP is a 17-day program that includes classes, as well as social and cultural activities that will help you enhance your English language skills, make you more aware of the Canadian academic world, and increase your social network.
A combination of academic, cultural and social activities, LEAP is designed to help you become comfortable with your new learning and living environment before the official start of classes.
