University Transfer Students

Admission Requirements

Consideration For Admission of Candidates From Accredited Degree-Granting Institutions
Candidates with acceptable standing at accredited degree-granting institutions may be considered for admission provided that the content of studies completed is equivalent in content to the courses offered by Western, and to the requirements of the program to which the student has applied. The University will review other candidates on an individual basis. Admission in all cases is competitive.

Individuals applying as transfer students must have achieved a minimum final overall average of “B-” (70 per cent) in all previous university studies with no extensive academic difficulty, and have graduated from secondary school or equivalent with an acceptable academic average.

Please note: Due to limited enrollment, programs such as Biological and Medical Science, Engineering, Health Science, Kinesiology, Management and Organizational Studies, and Media Theory and Production may require a higher admissions average. Admission to limited enrollment programs is subject to the requirements of the program and is contingent on space availability.

Applicants without a secondary school diploma and who are not 21 years of age or older must have credit in at least five full university-level courses in order to be considered for admission.

If you are attending university and are in first-year, you will normally be considered for admission based on a final transcript. However, a conditional admissions decision may be made based on strong first year, first semester results and a strong final secondary school average. If you are in second year or higher, you will be considered for conditional admission on the basis of a mid-year transcript.

Transfer Credit Eligibility

Transfer credit may be granted for all courses completed at another university with a minimum mark of 60% (C standing), provided that these courses, even though not offered at this University, are recognized as reaching acceptable university standards and may be appropriately included in the program of studies at The University of Western Ontario. The granting of such credit shall be subject to the following additional provisions:

1. Credit will not be allowed for any courses completed at another university in fulfillment of the basic requirements for university admission, i.e. preliminary year; credit may be allowed for any additional courses completed concurrently.

2.Transfer credit for students applying from the first year of a four-year general university program subsequent to completion of Grade 12 (Senior Matriculation) will be determined by the Office of the Registrar. Transfer Credit may be denied for courses normally taken in secondary school as part of the Ontario secondary school curriculum.

3. A student with a first-year program of study at another university may be granted credit up to the number of courses constituting the first year of the program at The University of Western Ontario to which the student would be admitted. Where more courses than the normal load prescribed at the other university were completed concurrently, additional credit may be allowed.

4.Transfer credit may be granted for a half course(s) successfully completed at another university. If a full course in the same subject with overlapping course content at the same level is taken at The University of Western Ontario, credit for only one full course will be allowed towards the fulfillment of the requirements for graduation in a degree program.

5. The Office of the Registrar and the Dean of the faculty in which the student will take the course shall have sole jurisdiction over granting of admission with transfer credit. The decision at the time of admission will be final and binding.

Transfer of Course Credits Among Ontario Universities
Acceptance of transfer credits among Ontario universities shall be based on the recognition that, while learning experiences may differ in a variety of ways, their substance may be essentially equivalent in terms of their content and rigor. Insofar as possible, acceptance of transfer should allow for the maximum recognition of previous learning experience in university-level courses.

Subject to degree, grade and program requirements, any course offered for credit by one university shall be accepted for credit by another Ontario university when there is an essential equivalency in course content.

Residency Requirement

Transfer students who are admitted with advanced standing must complete a minimum of 10.0 courses including at least 5.0 senior courses (numbered 2000 - 4999) through The University of Western Ontario. The majority of courses in each module must be completed through The University of Western Ontario or one of the Affiliated University Colleges.

Letters of Permission must be granted from your home institution in order to attend classes at Western beginning in our spring/summer session.

Special Students - Applicants Already Possessing a Degree

Admission Requirements

Special students are those applicants who have been granted a degree from a recognized university and who wish to take undergraduate courses for the purpose of upgrading. If you have earned an undergraduate degree and wish to take further courses for credit, you may apply as a special student. You will be considered for admission if you have a degree from a recognized institution that is equivalent to at least a 15-course bachelor’s degree at Western and if you have achieved a minimum overall average of “C” (60 per cent) in the context of Western’s grading system. Admission as a special student does not imply acceptance into a graduate program. Applicants who intend to enter a graduate program should request an application from the School of Graduate Studies and Postdoctural Studies.
